Description of the tool

The European EMAS Regulation specifies the requirements to comply with when setting up an Environmental Management System (EMS). It is a voluntary scheme.

EMAS goes beyond ISO 14001 thanks to four additional requirements of the European regulation:

  • Involving employees;
  • Providing legal compliance for the certification audit;
  • External communication provided by the Environmental Statement;
  • Taking into account indirect aspects (ex: subcontractors, suppliers, …).

Setting up an EMAS EMS is validated when the external auditor accredited by the European Union has carried out the audit and has granted the EMAS certification.    The certificate is valid for a period of three years.
